A restaurant in the West End is serving up an affordable steak dinner that is ideal for an economical date night.

The steak frites at Chateau-X are now only £10 between Monday and Wednesday as part of their new "Meat the Frites Menu".

On a rainy Tuesday evening, I headed to the Claremont Street restaurant with my partner to put the budget-friendly dinner to the test.

Around 8pm when we arrived, the steakhouse was bustling and we were promptly shown to our table by a member of staff.

The £10 steak frites is a combination of flatiron steak and a heaping portion of fries.

While the steak portion is smaller than we were expecting (based on press released by the restaurant), for a tenner it's still a good deal.

We added a bearnaise sauce (£2.50) and a peppercorn sauce (£2), along with tobacco onions (£3).

The steaks were served overcooked and well-done to our dismay which is quickly noticed by a nearby waitress.

She scoops up our plates in a flurry of apologies and rushes them back to the kitchen to be corrected.

On a busy night, mistakes can be part of the experience - it's how they are dealt with that makes all the difference.

In this case, the staff were exceptional and made sure the minor hiccup was dealt with smoothly.

When our dishes are returned it's time to dig in, albeit armed with a rather silly cleaver. Thankfully the steak is pre-sliced.

Now, the steak itself was not the star of the show, but what it lacked in lustre was made up for by the incredible sauces and crispy golden fries.

The buttery bearnaise sauce has the perfect anise-y tarragon hit and the peppercorn is just as creamy with a gentle kick.

The tobacco onions are a nice addition, skinny and crisp.

For a weeknight treat, the £10 deal is perfect for a date night on the cheap or a catch-up with pals.

Dimming the lights would have been a good improvement to the atmosphere, but otherwise, the experience was an enjoyable one and I would be keen to return.
