A SCOTTISH charity supporting children and adults affected by childhood sexual abuse has been given a four-figure boost.

The Moira Anderson Foundation received a donation of around £2000 from Allied Vehicles Charitable Trust - a committee of staff set up to support charity and community organisations.

Already, the charity has been able to raise £11,000 of the £17,000 needed for a project that will offer play and art sessions for children and young people.

Gillian Urquhart, director of the Moira Anderson Foundation, said: “We are so delighted. The donation will make such a difference to the clients we support, with each year since 2000 we have had an increase in referrals.

“In the early years, we would have had around 100 referrals a year. In 2022 we received 839 referrals, including 125 children, this year is proving to be equally as busy.

“Your support assists in making it possible for us to provide therapy and counselling to children and young people who have been affected by childhood sexual abuse.

“Every penny raised helps immensely, particularly at this very difficult time.

“Supporting the charity means that we can continue to offer this invaluable service to clients.”

The organisation was set up in 2000 as a legacy to an 11-year-old girl of the same name who disappeared from her home in Coatbridge in 1957.

Moira’s body has never been found but she is believed to have been killed by bus driver and convicted paedophile Alexander Gartshore, who died 17 years ago.

The charity offers safety and support for survivors of childhood sexual abuse and sought support from Allied Vehicles Charitable Trust with its latest project.

David Facenna, Allied Vehicles' corporate culture director, added: “Nothing I say can eliminate the suffering these survivors have gone through.

‘However, I hope that our contribution helps bring this project to fruition and gives them more much-needed support."
