Cops have urged visitors to a popular fireworks event to 'follow the rules' amid safety risks.

Hundreds are expected to turn out for the annual Guy Fawkes celebrations at Strathclyde Park on Sunday.

In preparation for the event, which is expected to be 'very busy', a policing plan has been put in place.

The force has reminded guests of the potential dangers of fireworks and urged them to stay safe and follow the rules of the event.

Chief Inspector Stephen McGovern said: “Police Scotland is working closely with a range of key partners, including North Lanarkshire Council, in advance of Bonfire Night to keep everyone safe.

“We want everyone to enjoy the event at Strathclyde Country Park and the safety of our communities is our main priority.

“It is a busy time for police and other emergency services and we want to highlight the risks and consequences of fireworks-related incidents and ask everyone to take care and follow instructions from officers if required.

“Bonfire Night ought to be a safe and enjoyable experience for all and the public can help us achieve this by ensuring they follow the event rules.”

It comes after we reported that North Lanarkshire Council has implemented a number of road closures and reminded visitors of the restricted parking options.

Guests are urged to either arrive early, travel by public transport or park further away and walk to the event.

Police officers will also be on hand to manage traffic in and out of the event.

A number of items, including fireworks, sparklers and drones, are not permitted to be brought into the event.

Pets are not allowed, and anyone found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will also be refused entry.
