UPDATE Probe into 'dangerous substances' in flat ongoing after street locked down for hours

The discovery of potentially hazardous substances has prompted a 999 response in Glasgow's East End. 

Shettleston Road is closed at Fernan Street, St Mark Street, Blair Street and Old Shettleston Road.

Police, fire and ambulance crews are at the scene alongside specialist incident units.

In a statement, Police Scotland said: "Police and emergency services are in attendance at a property in Shettleston Road, Glasgow, following the discovery of potentially hazardous substances within Shettleston Road is closed at Fernan Street, St Mark Street, Blair Street and Old Shettleston Road."

It is understood the lockdown of the road happened just after 1pm. 

Several bus services have been diverted due to the incident.

One resident said: “I live down Shettleston Road and I can’t get in to my flat.”

Another resident said: “ I asked police what’s going on but they won’t say.”

A spokesperson for First Bus advised commuters on social media that four services had been affected.

They wrote: "SERVICE UPDATE - 2/46/60/60a Due to a fire at Shettleston Rd, we are diverting via Old Shettleston Rd, Fernan St W-bound, Old Shettleston Rd, Chester St E-bound."
