Two incredible Glasgow boys are inspiring a whole generation by helping people in need.

Jack Smith and Kallum McQueen, from Ruchill, North Glasgow, have been part of the team at North United Communities (NUC) for more than a year.

After attending the Friday sessions for kids, the duo decided they wanted to help out.

Last Christmas, they joined youth worker Darren Goudie in handing out packages donated by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

He was in awe of the boys' attitude towards volunteering.

Darren said: “The firefighters donated us warm packs, with towels, torches, hand warmers and blankets. The two boys decided to go to the city centre and hand them out with us.

“They were so enthusiastic. It was cold and snowing but they were incredible. They got to see first-hand how kindness can change somebody’s life.

“We walked around for an hour and a half, giving out the blankets and the boys were chatting to the service users, it was a real eye-opener."

The youngest people to ever sign up at the charity, the schoolboys made a huge impression at NUC.

Darren said: “Jack is in his first year of secondary school and Kallum is still in primary. They are brilliant. It’s great to see them getting involved, making their own decisions and helping out.

"They also took part in our Easter, summer and October programmes, three times a week.

“They are volunteering every single day, trying to get children involved in the community.

“One time Jack told us ‘it’s great that I can give back to the community that I stay in’.

“For such a young person to say that, it speaks loads."

The boys won the Lord Provost's Special Recognition Award at the Glasgow Community Champion Awards on Tuesday, December 5. The event is run by the Glasgow Times in partnership with Glasgow City Council, Trades House Glasgow, Wheatley Glasgow and Merck.

Darren said: “It's amazing they won this award, they are buzzing. It's an achievement of a lifetime.”

Glasgow Times:

"If the younger ones see the boys getting their award, it’s a great example.

“You can see Jack and Kallum’s confidence build up too. Hopefully, they can become role models for all the kids. If they continue on this path, it will inspire the others.

"I am so proud of the two boys. They have hearts of gold."
