Pupils in Glasgow's Southside put others' needs above their own despite the impact of the cost of living on their school community.

For Our Lady of the Rosary primary school in Cardonald collected items to be donated to food banks across the city as part of our Bank on Us festive campaign.

In the run up to the festive season, we were collecting funds for our toy appeal which helped struggling families provide a child with a toy on Christmas Day.

It was not just the pupils who were involved in the effort with staff at the school and parents chipping in too.

Finn Gaughan, 9, touched on how his mum was the driving force behind him getting involved as he, along with his fellow classmates, filled up a number of bags that were collected before Christmas.

The nine-year-old also explained that along with the school's effort to gather food to hand over, his mum helped raise money to buy toys that were donated along with the essential items for the food banks.

The youngster, said: "It was mainly my mum that helped me take part in this because she raised money that would go to helping others.

"She wanted to get lots of toys for people to open up on Christmas.

"I am pretty proud of her."

Another pupil who helped gather items is Findlay Todd who gave up some of his old toys and donated them along with tinned food, cereal and household items

The nine-year-old picked out ones that he wasn't using anymore and put them in the bag, something he said he was "happy to do".

He said: "Yeah I had fun but it was also my mum too that helped me take part.

"I told my mum a number of things that I didn't need anymore and put it in the bags because I wasn't using them.

"I feel good helping others."

Sharon McMillan, headteacher, said: "I am proud of the boys and everyone who helped throughout.

"Sometimes families at this school don't have that much and for them to contribute that much is amazing.

"The cost of living really has hit this school very hard and to see the families' support is amazing."

Piotr Sztabralowski of Storage Vault, who partnered up with the Glasgow Times for the Bank on Us campaign, added: "The kids were very happy to get involved by the looks of it and it makes me very proud to see that."
