Another year of the Irn-Bru Carnival was celebrated by Glaswegians young and old on Friday afternoon.

The fair swung open the doors of the SEC at noon to kick off the 104th edition of the event.

The opening ceremony was led by pint-sized piper Jack Folan, 10, joined by lead organiser Margaret Cowan and the Irn-Bru Can Man.

Proving age is just a number, daredevil care home residents from Rosepark, Whitecraigs and Croftbank whooped it up at the opening as they took on fairground classics like the Waltzers, Dodgems and Flying Dumbos.

Mary Connelly, 90, shared her memories of attending the carnival as a young girl.

The Uddingston resident said: “My mum used to take me to the carnival with my sisters and brothers when I was younger and I loved going on the big wheel.”

Fellow Rosepark Uddingston resident Bella Farrell, 77, revelled in memories of the rides from attending the carnival with her family when she was younger.

She added: “My favourite rides were the Walters and the Ferris wheel.”

The first carnival took place at Kelvin Hall in 1919 alongside the circus - older generations may remember the smell of the elephants greeting fair-goers at the door.

These days, the sounds of upbeat music and the scent of frying food welcome punters into the world of the carnival.

Margaret Cowan, lead organiser at the carnival said: “The Irn-Bru Carnival is a Glasgow institution and has been for 104 years.

"It’s great to see the Renaissance Care residents trying out our rides, and food stalls and just having a blast on our opening day – they are truly proving that age is just a number, and the Carnival is for everyone, no matter what age you are.

“We love hearing the stories of the Carnival from times gone by and welcoming back those who have joined us year in and year out, now bringing their kids, and grandkids, to join in the fun."

For thrill-seekers, new rides this year are the Extreme Ice Blast, the Air Ride and the Super Trooper.

The Irn-Bru Carnival is open until Sunday, January 14 (excluding Christmas Day). To find out more, click here.
