A Glasgow woman was given over £2500 from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) following a payment mix-up.

After regularly receiving income support, the woman was shocked to find that the payments stopped without any warning or explanation as to why.

Stressed, she contacted the office of his local MP, Alison Thewliss, to explain the situation.

Ms Thewliss’s team got in touch directly with the DWP, who explained that as the constituent’s son was no longer in receipt of Personal Independence Payments (PIP), it meant that their Carers Allowance had come to an end.

In turn, this stopped their Income Support (IS) and the woman was advised to instead apply for Universal Credit.

But her son had transferred to Adult Disability Payment and their Carers Allowance was reinstated, so this meant they would still be entitled to Income Support.

Ms Thewliss' office challenged the DWP and informed them that the woman was due a refund to make up as back payments for the time he did not receive this money.

The amount came to £2538.20.

Speaking of her delight, the constituent said: “Alison’s team were a huge support in all of this, and I can’t thank them enough for everything they have done for me.

“This was a worrying time for my family, but I am just so happy that everything has now been sorted.

“If you find yourself in a similar position to mine, I’d definitely say it’s worth contacting your local MP to get the support in times of need.”

Ms Thewliss added: “Over the past few months, my constituent has been so patient throughout what must have been a distressing time for them and their family.

“My team were able to contact the DWP to raise these issues and I am happy to see that these have now been resolved.

“I want to give a thanks to the DWP for their continuous dialogue throughout this case and their understanding of the difficulties being faced by the constituent.

“If any Glasgow Central constituents are in need of support, please do not hesitate to contact my office via email: alison.thewliss.mp@parliament.uk, or via phone call: 0141 552 7117.

“My team are always more than happy to help with a range of issues and urge any constituent to get in touch.”
