A Glasgow man stole from three city centre stores and assaulted a security guard.

Around 10.15am on January 2, 2024, Saleh Amjad Haji was spotted walking on Buchanan Street, acting suspiciously.

He entered the Michael Kors store and grabbed a handbag worth £235. He also went to Hotel Chocolat and stole a quantity of desserts.

His description was noted.

CCTV caught the 35-year-old on Miller Street, carrying the bag, which he put in a Lidl carrier bag.

He then entered TK Maxx on Argyle Street, where a security guard has heard his description.

The employee approached Haji, who pushed him on the legs, hand and chest area. He was then escorted from the premises.

Haji then went to SuperDry in St Enoch Shopping Centre. He was seen there, grabbing two jackets from a rack.

Police were called. Haji was cautioned, charged and taken to Govan Police Station.

He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court from custody this week.

His lawyer said: "He is living in temporary accommodation in the city centre.

"He has been there since July 2023.

"He was invited to a party there, where there were drugs and alcohol. He engaged in reckless behaviour afterwards. He was stoating around.

"He has one conviction for shoplifting. He is on a community payback order and he has not offended since then. He almost got his own tenancy but it was ceased as a result of his sentence.

"He seemed to have developed a drug problem but he has got himself free from drugs. He had a relationship with a lady who got herself into trouble. That has now ended.

"He is anxious to show that he changed his ways."

With regards to the assault of the security guard, he said: "He had his fingers on his chest and pushed him slightly.

"Thereafter, he crossed the road to SuperDry."

Sheriff Michael Hanlon jailed Haji for 18 months.
