More than £72,000 has been granted by the city council to replace and maintain two synthetic grass pitches at a Govan community sports hub.

Members of the city administration committee agreed earlier today to allocate £72,665 towards the replacement and maintenance of a full-size 3G football pitch and a floodlit 7-a-side 2G pitch at Park Villa Community Sports Hub within the Drumoyne Campus.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic the Hub, which includes an indoor gym space, dance studio and a four-court sports hall as well as the outdoor synthetic pitches and two natural grass pitches, was operated and managed by the team at Glasgow Life.

But following the financial challenges post-pandemic it was unable to open to the public and Park Villa Football Development applied to take over as operational managers through the People Make Glasgow Communities (PMGC) initiative.

The pitch sport facilities at the Hub are also used by Pirie Park Primary and Pirie Park Secondary Schools.

Local councillor Ricky Bell expressed his enthusiasm for the project and the benefit it would bring his constituents.

He said: “As a local member for Govan I want to welcome this funding – this is a fantastic facility within my ward which has been very successful in the PMGC programme.

“It is really good to see this money being allocated to allow them to upgrade the football pitches there. It’s a very community based organisation and obviously as you can tell by it’s name runs football clubs but it is a much wider facility in terms of how they support local people in the community.

“I think it is really really good news and I would like to thank councillor McLean for bringing this paper before us today and warmly welcome that money being spent in the Park Villa.”

Councillor Imran Alam added: “I think if there ever was a successful post covid community story then this certainly is one.

“I think the team has done a great job to use the facilities well. I am fully supportive of the recommendation and hope that the facility continues to be successful.”
