A man was caught breaking into a house on Christmas Day by the homeowner on his video doorbell.

John Gallacher, 55, entered Rory Clark's home in Glasgow's Dennistoun on December 25, 2023.

The city's Sheriff Court heard that Mr Clark was at his parent's home in the North of Scotland.

He had earlier locked and secured his property before making the journey. His video doorbell and internal CCTV were activated.

Prosecutor John Bedford said: "At 8.17pm, Gallacher approached the front door in possession of a white plastic bag.

"He jemmied the front window open with a crowbar and entered the property.

"Mr Clark received a notification on his phone that the video doorbell at his home had been activated.

"He thereafter accessed live footage and observed the events as well as Gallacher walking within his living room.

"Mr Clark shouted at Gallacher to leave his property and he contacted the police with his description."

Gallacher was not at the scene when officers arrived but was later traced nearby.

Gallacher dropped a white plastic bag and a metallic sound was heard.

A red crowbar was spotted poking out. Gallacher was searched and a black glove was recovered.

Gallacher was charged and replied: "That wasn't me."

Gallacher, of the city's Townhead, pled guilty today to housebreaking with intent to steal.

He was jailed for 12 months by Sheriff Shona Gilroy.
