An 'iconic' A-listed building in Glasgow's city centre has went up for sale.

The Egyptian Halls, which are based on Union Street, has went up for an undisputed fee on Shepard Chartered Surveyors recently.

The news comes after The Alexander Thomson Society, which aims to promote and safeguard the architect's work, and thousands of Glaswegians began the fight to save the famous halls in 2020.

The Alexander Thomson Society launched a petition calling on Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government to save the Egyptian Halls. It was was signed by over 4000 people.

Last year, the owner of the hall - Derek Souter of Union Street Developments (USD) - was served with an interdict by Glasgow City Council after putting highly lucrative but illegal advertising on scaffolding erected on the property.

The building was covered in scaffolding for fifteen years and USD were thought to have netted the owners around £70,000 a month.

It was previously hoped that the interdict would be the first step in securing a future for the building, which was completed in 1872 as new commercial premises for James Robertson, an iron manufacturer.

However, The Egyptian Halls, considered Alexander 'Greek' Thompson's greatest achievement, seemingly confirmed the sale as they wrote on their website, "the ownership structure allows for 100% flexibility and allows the mutual shareholders of both companies to look for a Joint Venture Partner or an outright Sale for either the Ground Floors owned by USP or the Upper Floors owned by USI or a combined option of both USP and USI’s properties."

Glasgow Times:

On Shepard Chartered Surveyors website, an artists impression has been put forward of a proposed scheme which is subject to planning

They wrote: "Please see above 'artist impression' showing a proposed scheme which is subject to planning. This would transform an Iconic listed building within Glasgow’s City Centre.
