The people of Glasgow gathered in the Merchant City to celebrate St Patrick's Day this weekend.

The historic day marking Ireland's patron saint is Sunday, March 17.

But ahead of that, the Merchant Square hosted a St Patrick's Day festival which saw thousands turn up to celebrate the special day.

Revellers donned green, white and orange garlands, clover accessories, leprechaun hats and more to take in the festivities.

The Saint Francis pipe band entertained crowds at Saturday's event, and a raffle was hosted by the Stewart School of Irish Dance in Lenzie.

Up for grabs as the top prize was a signed Celtic home shirt.

The event is held at the Merchant Square annually and sees thousands of visitors attend to celebrate Ireland through music, dance and partying.

Our photographer Colin Mearns headed to the venue to capture the action - can you spot yourself in the photos below?

It comes as we told that Glasgow was named the best city in Scotland and the sixth best city in the UK to celebrate St Patrick's Day.

A travel expert team at Accor have determined the best cities to celebrate by checking Google Reviews for the most positive reviews of a pint of Guinness.

Known as the ‘Black Stuff’, Guinness is notoriously hard to pour and, according to the Guinness Storehouse, the perfect pint requires a tulip glass, a 45-degree angle pour and servers need to wait for around a minute to fill it.
