Major works to make Glasgow train services more reliable are set to take place over the Easter weekend.

Network Rail has said they will complete 'various projects' between Saturday, March 30 and Monday, April 1, to make the country's railway infrastructure and services more reliable.

The work is part of a £12.6million investment into Scotland's railways.

On the West Coast Main Line engineers will be renewing the track throughout Saturday, March 30 and Sunday, March 31, between Shieldmuir Junction and Motherwell.

Meanwhile, work will also take place between Rutherglen and Glasgow Central throughout Saturday, March 30, Sunday, March 31, and Monday, April 1, to renew points, switches, and crossings which allow trains to cross from one track to another.

However, during the work, some Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, LNER, Caledonian Sleeper and ScotRail services will be affected, and passengers are being urged to check with their train operator before travelling.

Glasgow Times:

At the same time, the rail firm has said the bridge over the railway on Shields Road in Glasgow will be demolished - but passenger services won't be affected by this.

Liam Sumpter, route director, Network Rail Scotland said: “I’m pleased that most of Scotland’s Railway network will remain open during the Easter bank holiday.

“We know how important Easter is for families and friends to catch up and, while there’s never a good time to do the work we need to do, the bank holiday is a time when fewer people travel, giving us the opportunity to do work we couldn’t do on a normal weekend.

“Our thanks go to passengers, freight users and our lineside neighbours for their patience during these works.”

While most of the work won't cause any disruption to passengers travelling by train over the bank holiday, Network Rail has urged those travelling to plan ahead for some disruption.
