Huge plans have been revealed to demolish a busy supermarket - and replace it with a 'bigger and better' one.

After serving the local area for over 26 years, a brand-new Lidl store will be built to cater to shoppers on Whistleberry Road in Blantyre.

Work is underway to build the shop, which will be 30% bigger than the existing one and promises to have a 'modern and contemporary' design.

Inside will be a shop floor spanning 1339 square metres, with an in-store bakery, customer toilets and recycling facilities.

There will be 91 parking spaces, including six accessible parking spaces; two EV charging spaces and nine dedicated parent and child spaces.

Solar panels will also be installed on the roof to help capture energy for the store.

Customers who usually shop at the Blantyre store can make use of nearby stores on Bothwell Road in Uddingston and Muir Street while construction work is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Lidl staff have been redeployed to nearby stores until the new one is completed.

Lidl GB’s regional head of property, Ross Jackson, said: “Having served the community of Blantyre for over two decades, we can’t wait to bring a bigger and better store to the area.

"We were excited to break ground and are extremely grateful for all the support we’ve received so far.

"Thank you to everyone for your continued understanding whilst we enter this next phase of the development.”
