A serial abuser who preyed on three women over a decade and inflicted psychological harm on victims was jailed for 10 years today.

James Howe subjected victims to physical, mental and sexual abuse at addresses in Glasgow between 2010 and 2020.

A judge told Howe, 40, at the High Court in Edinburgh: "The jury convicted you of a number of serious offences."

Lord Lake said it was clear that victims of Howe had suffered substantial harm and told him that in his view only a prison sentence was an appropriate disposal.

Howe, formerly of Maryhill Road, Glasgow, had denied a series of charges during an earlier trial but was found guilty of offences including abusive conduct, assault and rape.

All three of the victims were throttled by Howe during violent outbursts, and two were grabbed and dragged by the hair.

Between January 2010 and November the following year Howe's first victim was subjected to shouting and swearing, being kicked on the head and body and having her head hit off furniture and walls at properties at addresses in Glasgow.

The woman also had a knife held against her neck and was raped by Howe.

Howe installed a tracking app on a second woman's phone to monitor her movements and took a photo of her in her underwear without her consent and threatened to send it to work colleagues during abuse against her he perpetrated between 2013 and 2016.

During abuse of a third woman committed between December 2019 and July the following year he also downloaded a tracking app to her mobile phone and persistently asked that she let him take indecent photos and videos of her to send to others.

Lord Lake ordered that Howe should be under supervision for a further four year period when he will be under licence and can be returned to jail if he breaches its conditions.

Defence counsel Donald Findlay KC said there were testimonials on behalf of Howe before the court which suggested there was a different man to the one found guilty of the offences.

The judge told Howe that following his sentencing he would be on the sex offenders' register for an indefinite period.
