Tributes have poured in for a University of Glasgow professor who has sadly passed away. 

It has been announced that Greg Philo, who co-founded the Glasgow Media Group ( A group of researchers formed at the University of Glasgow) and was a Professor of Communications and Social Change in the department of Sociology at Glasgow University, has sadly died.

His passing was confirmed by Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, who described Philo as a very popular teacher and colleague. 

He added: “Greg was a driving force of the Media Group for many years and a very popular colleague and teacher.

"My deepest condolences to his family and friends on their loss."

Tributes quickly poured in on X, formerly known as Twitter, as students, friends and family shared their heartbreak over the news. 

One person wrote: "So sorry to hear of Greg Philo's passing. His work was a huge influence on my thinking and changed my perspective on many issues.

"I had the privilege of hearing him lecture and chat to him afterwards. His legacy is incredible. Thoughts to you all."

Another said: "Greg Philo was indeed fearless and an absolute breath of fresh air. RIP."

A third added: "Yesterday morning I heard that my long time mentor, colleague and dear friend, Greg Philo, passed away and I’m still reeling from the shock and sadness.

"It’s difficult to articulate the importance of Greg in my life. I simply wouldn’t be doing what I'm doing were it not for him."
