Cops and firefighters remain on the scene in the aftermath of a fire that destroyed a 'beautiful' former primary school.

Firefighters raced to Gartsherrie Road in Coatbridge at around 7.45pm on Sunday following reports of a blaze.

Formerly Gartsherrie School, the site is now derelict and thankfully there have not been any injuries.

Images from the scene on Monday morning show the aftermath of the fire which ripped through the roof and windows of the red brick structure.

The roof is gone and the windows are covered in ash, as is some of the stonework.

Fire engines are still there and a height appliance is still working to extinguish the fire from above, while police tape has been erected around the site.
