Two thugs who injured two Austrian tourists in a vicious city centre assault were jailed today for a total of 35 months.

Haris Ali, 32, and Adam Scholes, 30, pounced on Manuel Winkler and Andreas Buerkle in Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street on May 5 2022.

Scholes, who was sentenced to 20 months, initially argued with Mr Winkler - who was in the city with Mr Buerkle on a work conference - which turned violent.

Ali, who was jailed for 15 months, meantime struck Mr Buerkle on the face before he was pulled away from the scene by Mr Winkler.

Ali, Scholes and co-accused Morgan Leggat, 23, later ambushed a Kevin Lynch leaving him with a facial fracture.

The trio, all of Girvan, Ayrshire, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Lynch to his severe injury.

Ali also admitted assaulting Mr Buerkle to his injury while Scholes pleaded guilty to the attack on Mr Winkler to his severe injury.

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre placed Leggat on a community payback order at sentencing.

He was ordered to do 300 hours of unpaid work and put under supervision for one year.

Leggat was also tagged for one year and told to pay his victim £3,000 in compensation.

Glasgow Sheriff Court earlier heard the Austrian men were on a night out before they went to a takeaway when they came across Scholes.

Prosecutor Sean Docherty said: "Scholes engaged in an argument and punched Mr Winkler to the nose which resulted in a nasal fracture.

"Ali then hit Mr Buerkle to the face resulting in his glasses falling off as well as swelling to his head."

Mr Winkler pulled Mr Buerkle away from the scene and took refuge in a nearby pub.

The hearing was told that 20 minutes later, Ali, Scholes and Leggat set upon Mr Lynch who was getting a takeaway.

Mr Docherty said: "Mr Lynch was punched to the head then kicked to the body and face by all three."

The trio fled the scene while a taxi was flagged down which took Mr Lynch to hospital.

He was later treated for a fracture to the right side of his face and a wound to the top of his head which required two staples.

The three attackers were traced in May 2022 and arrested.

It was revealed that Ali and Scholes have previous convictions while Legatt is a first time offender.
