The gates of a community centre will now be locked overnight as vehicles were being ‘abandoned’ in the car park.

The issue, affecting Netherton Community Centre in the north-west of Glasgow, was brought to light at a recent meeting of High Knightswood & Anniesland Community Council.

Annmarie Waddell, who works at the centre, explained that two cars appeared to have been dumped in the car park in recent months.

This reportedly prompted regular calls from concerned neighbours.

Annmarie said: “We are constantly getting phone calls from neighbours across the road about a car that has been abandoned.

“A grey Jaguar has been in the front car park since November 12. It came in from the bottom end. A lady and a gentleman had trouble parking it; it took them a while, they locked it up, and they’ve not been back.

“A red car has also been left in the back car park. We are finding this to be an issue. People coming in and abandoning cars.”

An officer from Drumchapel Police Station told the meeting that the problem did not seem to be improving.

They further noted that this would not be an issue that Police Scotland could assist with.

Instead, it would be Glasgow City Council’s responsibility to uplift the vehicles.

It is understood that this is due to the cars being parked within a car park and not on a public street.

The officer commented: “I would always encourage you to phone 101. Cars are getting abandoned; it seems to be continuing and not improving.

“You can contact the council, as it is in a car park; it is the council’s responsibility.”

Annmarie went on to tell the meeting that the team at the centre had been considering locking the gates of the car park in the evening to combat the issue.

She added: “We’re looking at getting the gates locked at night. We could get signage first to say the car park will be locked at a certain time so no one gets stuck.”

Glasgow Life, which runs the community centre, has since confirmed that the gates will in fact be locked overnight.

The matter has also been reported to police.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Life said: “This matter has been reported to Police Scotland and Glasgow City Council’s Vehicle Pound.

“The gates at Netherton Community Centre will be locked out with the facility’s opening hours and signs put in place to deter people from abandoning vehicles within its car park.”

GCC has been contacted for comment.
