Tiny kitten left on train now helping other cats with new appeal

The young cat, who has now been named Annie, was discovered in her carrier aboard the 8.25am service travelling from Helensburgh to Edinburgh on January 8.

She was later taken to the station office at Dalmuir by concerned members of the public.

The Scotrail team contacted Cats Protection’s Glasgow branch, which placed Annie with a foster family.

The charity believes she was intentionally abandoned, as no owner has come forward despite the adorable kitten making headlines. 

Cats Protection has since launched a fundraiser to support Annie’s care and that of other cats in need.

Elaine Brennan, co-ordinator at Cats Protection Glasgow branch, said: "After receiving the call from the Scotrail team and collecting Annie from Dalmuir Station, we were able to place her with one of our dedicated fosterers.

"We’d like to say a big thank you to the Scotrail team for acting so quickly and doing all they could to reassure Annie.

"She was understandably initially scared from her ordeal, but being so young and in a foster environment meant that she soon showed her playful kitten nature.

"She has especially taken to her foster dad and loves nothing more than curling up with him.

"Sadly, an owner hasn’t come forward for Annie, so it is highly likely that she was abandoned.

"She is still receiving her vaccinations so isn’t quite ready to find her forever home, but we know that when the time comes, she will make a wonderful addition.

"We’d be so grateful to anyone who can support or share Annie’s story."

A statement on the charity’s JustGiving fundraiser described Annie’s journey and the care she now receives.

The statement read: "Although she’s only been in our care for a short while, she has shown what a loving little cat she is.

"She loves to play and is enjoying nothing more than cuddling up and purring with her foster dad.

"We will give Annie the very best of care and attention, for however long she needs us."

The fundraiser also highlights the financial realities of rescue work.

It costs £45 for an initial vet consultation and £10 for flea and worming treatments, while neutering can cost around £100.

The charity, run entirely by volunteers, receives no government funding and relies on donations to cover all expenses.

This includes food, litter, toys and veterinary care.

Annie will be health-checked, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before she becomes available for adoption.

The charity is also encouraging the public to support or share Annie’s story to help raise funds for other cats in need.
