Glasgow boxer guilty of decade of abuse as Dalmuir kidnappers jailed

Former boxer Jonathan Slowey, 35, was found guilty of 14 charges, including the rape and abuse of three women over more than ten years.

His crimes took place between 2012 and 2023 in Glasgow’s East End, East Dunbartonshire, and Aberdeen.

Prosecutor Kath Harper KC told jurors Slowey created a “cocktail of fear and submission,” using physical, sexual, and emotional violence to dominate his victims.

He isolated them from loved ones, accused them of cheating, and eroded their confidence through constant control and humiliation.

One woman said she only agreed to sex out of fear of being attacked again, while another was assaulted while on medication and raped as she slept.

Slowey, who was banned from boxing in 2016 after testing positive for cocaine, denied all allegations and claimed the women and police had conspired against him.

The jury rejected his account.

He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced later this month, shouting as he was led away that he “never raped those lassies.”

In a separate case, Daniel O’Neill andJohn Sweeney, both 50, were each jailed for six years after abducting and assaulting a 33-year-old woman at a flat inDalmuir, West Dunbartonshire, on June 26, 2023.

The woman had visited the home of Sweeney and his partner, Jodie Morrison, when O’Neill launched an unprovoked attack.

With Sweeney’s help, he bound her legs with cable, kicked and punched her, and placed a pillowcase over her head before wrapping her in polythene.

The terrified victim was threatened with being drowned or fed to starving dogs before being released and warned not to go to police.

She suffered injuries to her ribs, nose, and eyes.

Both men were convicted of assault and abduction, with Lord Arthurson describing O’Neill as the “principal actor” and Sweeney as his “willing assistant.”

Anon-harassment order now prevents the pair from contacting the victim.

Morrison, 32, was cleared of involvement.
