A widely popular coffee chain is making moves to open a new branch in Glasgow city centre.

Caffè Nero, the Italian‑style coffee house brand founded by Gerry Ford in the 1990s and now operating more than 1,000 stores across 11 countries, has submitted plans to transform the unit at 50 Bothwell Street.

Display of new signage for the unit was approved on April 16, and a further planning application to convert the space into a coffee shop has been lodged with Glasgow City Council and is currently awaiting approval.

Drawings submitted with the application show a fit-out providing counter service and a mix of seating, including tables, banquette seating, and softer lounge-style areas, with space for around 70 to 80 customers on the main floor.

Planning documents state that neighbours in the surrounding area have been notified of the proposals.

Caffè Nero already has several city centre branches, including sites on Sauchiehall Street and Hope Street, and another at Gordon Street near Glasgow Central Station.
