Plans to demolish and completely rebuild a Lidl supermarket in Springburn have been approved, paving the way for a larger store with more parking.

Glasgow City Council gave the green light last week for the supermarket on Springburn Road to be replaced with a new retail unit, additional parking, and updated landscaping.

The development is part of Lidl’s wider ambitions in Glasgow, with the retailer targeting up to 26 new stores across the region.

The new Springburn store will offer around 1,988 square metres of floorspace, including 1,256 square metres of retail space and 732 square metres for storage and staff facilities.

The planning application, submitted by Rapleys LLP on behalf of Lidl Great Britain Limited, covers a 0.9-hectare site currently occupied by the existing store.

Parking will be increased from 101 to 120 spaces, with accessible bays and cycle parking included in the plans.

Landscaping and tree management will form part of the development, with measures in place to store waste internally.

The proposal did not require public consultation as it is classed as a local development, but it did include a design statement and full layout, elevation, and landscaping plans.

Lidl’s expansion plans in Glasgow include locations in Baillieston, Cathcart, Crookston, Drumchapel, Govan, Ibrox, Merchant City, Springburn, and Summerston.

Other areas under consideration for new stores include Bearsden, Bishopbriggs, Clarkston, Clydebank North, Cumbernauld North and South, Giffnock, Irvine, Kilmarnock, Largs, Milngavie, Newton Mearns, South and West Paisley, Renfrew, and Wishaw.

We reported last year that the supermarket applied to have the building demolished.
