Thousands of jobs are at risk after a major hospitality group announced plans to cut around 3,800 jobs across the UK and Ireland.

Whitbread, owner of the Premier Inn chain, unveiled the cuts as part of a new five-year strategy designed to tackle rising business costs.

The company operates at least nine Premier Inn hotels in Glasgow, including locations at George Square, Buchanan Galleries, St Enoch Square, Pacific Quay, and Argyle Street.

There are currently 74 Premier Inn hotel locations in Scotland.

Dominic Paul, chief executive of Whitbread, said: "We always challenge ourselves to improve and, in light of significant cost increases in the form of business rates and national insurance, as well as the implied market discount to our inherent value, we've looked hard at the options open to us to maximise value creation over the medium and long-term.

"This has been a rigorous process and we've approached all options with an open mind."

The five-year plan includes a £250 million cost-saving target and more than £1 billion in reduced capital spending, as well as changes to its restaurant operations.

A total of 197 branded dining venues will be replaced by a new "integrated food and drink model" within its hotels.

"Our new five-year plan builds on our strengths and drives a significant acceleration of our strategy."
