The Glasgow-based role will involve overseeing the safe operation, maintenance and preservation of the vessel, combining shore-based responsibilities with time onboard.
The successful candidate will be responsible for areas including engineering, maintenance, annual refits, technical projects and ensuring the ship continues to meet strict safety and compliance standards.
Waverley, the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2026 and continues to operate cruises around the UK from May to October.
The new Operations Director will work closely with the ship’s master, chief engineer, crew and shore-based team, reporting directly to the general manager.
Applicants are expected to have significant marine experience, including an MCA Certificate of Competency, with Chief Engineer experience preferred.
Experience in dry docking, refits, capital projects and commercial contract management would also be beneficial, while knowledge of steamships and designated person ashore responsibilities would be an advantage.

The appointment follows the retirement of Waverley’s current Operations Director after nine years of service.
The role will include planning and delivering the annual refit, managing technical upgrades and helping maintain the vessel’s operational standards.
Built in Glasgow for the London and North Eastern Railway, Waverley was launched in October 1946 and entered service in 1947.
The ship was later gifted to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society in 1974 for £1 and has operated as a preserved vessel since 1975.
During that time, she has carried more than six million passengers, including more than 150,000 during each of the last three summer seasons.

Owned by Waverley Steam Navigation Co Ltd, a registered charity, the vessel operates on a not-for-profit basis and remains fully restored in its original 1940s style.
Waverley is British registered to carry up to 750 passengers and offers day, afternoon and evening cruises around the UK.
A recent economic impact assessment estimated the ship contributes £11.6 million to the UK economy, more than double the figure recorded in a similar study eight years earlier.
