1 First footing:
Traditionally a tall, dark handsome stranger had to be the first at the door to bring good luck for the year ahead.
2 Black bun and shortbread: Symbolic gifts along with a lump of coal, whisky and salt.
3 Cleaning the house: It was tradition to clear the ashes from the house before midnight:
4 A Hogmanay drink: Champagne at the bells and whisky afterwards are the traditional tipples.
5 Auld Lang Syne: Everyone in the house stands in a circle, joins hands and sings the Burns favourite.
6 Saining the House: Ancient tradition that invloved blessing the house with water.
7 All debts settled: It was considered bad luck to have debts at New Year.
8 Het Pint: In olden days a drink of hot ale, nutmeg and whisky was offered.
9 Food: Scotch broth is traditional forthe Hogmanay feast as is clootie dumpling, clapshot and haggis.
10 A recital: Some households still keep the traditioon of reading a poem, singing a song or telling a joke.
