2 Blur: Led by Damon Albarn, they enjoyed a fierce chart battle with Oasis.
3 Pulp: Jarvis Cocker's band were active throughout the 80s but sprang to prominence in the 90s.
4 Suede: The London band led by Brett Anderson had a string of top 10 hits.
5 Ocean Colour Scene: The Birmingham band recorded an album, Live from the Riverboat, in Glasgow.
6 Manic Street Preachers: The Welsh band rapidly gained a cult status and are still playing today.
7 James: The single Sit Down was the best-known offering from this Manchester band.
8 Supergrass: Alternative rock band formed in 1993 in Oxford and disbanded in 2010.
9 Stereophonics: The Welsh group achieved five consecutive UK number one albums.
10 Elastica: Formed by two ex-Suede members, they were active until 2001.
