THE problems that have plagued parts of Govanhill are many and varied and not able to be explained easily.

There are environmental issues, with filthy back courts, and serious housing problems with some owners exploiting people in private rented flats which are in no better than slum conditions.

There is also the issue of crime and anti-social behaviour, and there have been horrific examples of serious crime in recent years to make people genuinely afraid.

The concerns have been heard, and the council, local housing association and Scottish Government have attempted to address the various issues.

It is understandable when public meetings become heated and people see little or no improvement in their community.

But all those concerned, the residents, police, council and health officials all want the same outcome.

These organisations need to work with the community and vice-versa to try and find a solution that will lead to improvements.

When faced with serious problems a community needs to stick together and unite to find common cause.

The frustrations are understandable and probably inevitable but everyone must engage constructively to solve the problems.

The CCTV will hopefully help with crime, and investment in housing will bring change, too.

Govanhill deserves a safer future.
