FORMER Rangers striker Billy Dodds is confident Jon Daly and Nicky Clark can form a lethal strike pairing for the Light Blues next season.

After Daly put pen-to-paper on his two-year Ibrox deal last week, Queen of the South front man Clark is set to follow suit and join Ally McCoist's side for the new Second Division campaign.

The two are at different stages of their respective careers but Dodds reckons they will prove a perfect combination.

He said: "Nicky has proven he can score goals at that level but he's still a young lad and can improve.

"Jon Daly is perhaps the ideal man to stick alongside him. It will be the big guy, wee guy partnership, which a lot of managers want.

"It is a great balance and usually both the big striker and the wee striker thrive on it.

"Nicky is coming to a big club but I don't think he will be overwhelmed.

"If it does take him a while to settle, playing alongside someone like Daly will help.

"He can take the weight off his shoulders and do the physical side of the game and let Nicky do what he does best, banging in the goals.

"He is proven and tested at this level but just not at a club like Rangers. I think the experience of Daly will help him."

While Daly has impressed for Dundee United in recent seasons, Clark has shot to prominence this term after a stunning campaign for the Doonhamers, netting 41 goals as Allan Johnston's side romped to title glory.

The son of former Ibrox forward Sandy, Clark will lead the Light Blues line next season but Dodds admits it will be difficult for him to repeat his superb scoring exploits.

He said: "If you look at Queen of the South in the Second Division last season, they would have created plenty of chances for Nicky. To score 41 goals in a season is a great achievement.

"I know people will say Rangers should create even more chances but you have to remember that teams raise their game against Rangers and go out to stop them so it can be difficult for them to open defences up.

"There is no doubt that he will still get a barrelload of goals, he is very capable."
