DEFINITELY says MATTHEW LINDSAY

NO doubt about it, Jon Daly had an absolute nightmare up front for Rangers against Brechin City at Ibrox at the weekend.

The big Irishman was given the chance to lead the line for his new club in their opening League One match.

And a glut of golden chances fell to the former Dundee United player in front of goal against the part-timers from Angus.

Yet, Daly could not convert one of them - a failing that led to the visitors coming back into the match in the second half.

However, the 30-year-old, a regular scorer during his time at Tannadice, has not forgotten how to finish overnight.

It is worth remembering the run-out against Brechin was just his second competitive appearance of the 2013/14 campaign. His sharpness in the final third will improve.

Crucially, he got himself in positions to score against Brechin. If Gers manager Ally McCoist continues to select him the goals will come. And plenty of them.

The chances are, too, he will not come up against as inspired a keeper as Graeme Smith, who was immense between the sticks for Brechin, in the remainder of this season.

NO says JOHN McGILL

IF Jon Daly had buried his chances against Brechin City on Saturday the game would have been sewn up for Rangers long before half-time.

But he missed a succession of opportunities and the visitors came back into the match when Steven Jackson scored in the second half.

The Ibrox club were very lucky referee George Salmond gave a penalty when Andy Little went down in the box shortly afterwards. It was a soft award.

If Ian Black had not netted his spot-kick on the rebound then it could have been another embarrassing result for Ally McCoist's team.

The SPFL Division One match showed that, even in the third tier of Scottish football, the Ibrox club need a clinical finisher playing for them up front.

Somebody else, then, should get the nod to face Stranraer at Stair Park this coming Saturday.

Allowing Daly to continue in the lone striker's role would send out the entirely wrong message that such play is acceptable.

The 30-year-old is a proven goalscorer and will net for Rangers, but McCoist must go with the man who is in form.
