Niko Matawalu scored the only try of the match as in-form Glasgow Warriors claimed a hard-fought 17-9 Guinness PRO12 victory over Treviso at Scotstoun last night.

Peter Horne missed the conversion, but kicked four penalties as Gregor Townsend's side consolidated second place in the overall standings with a result against the winless Italians.

Jayden Hayward kept Treviso in the match with three penalties, but it was not enough, as Horne's fourth kick robbed them of a losing bonus point.

In a game that turned into a stodgy battle in sodden conditions, Glasgow scored an early spectacular try as the ball passed through several hands before scrum-half Matawalu touched down with a flourish.

Glasgow stand-off Horne was unable to add the extras but matched Hayward from the penalty tee as the home side led 11-6 at the break.

For dogged, but limited Treviso, who had replacement prop Albert Anae red-carded in the second half, full-back Hayward scored a third penalty in the 53rd minute which cut Glasgow's lead to just 11-9, but two further efforts from Horne gave the Warriors a deserved win.

Meanwhile, Scotland's rugby league side produced a rousing finish to their European Championship campaign to keep alive their hopes of securing a place in the 2016 Four Nations Series.

The Bravehearts went down 38-22 to a lively France in Galashiels, but still top the table on points difference.

They will be crowned champions unless Ireland beat Wales by more than 40 points in the last match in Wrexham tomorrow.
