WELL done Celtic on their response to Ann Budge's criticism of the fans after last weekend's cup tie at Tynecastle.

It was measured, it was swift and it was correct.

I am sure Ann Budge's heart is in the right place, and she has done a lot to turn around the Hearts' fortunes.

But she is new to all of this, and has to learn you don't get involved in a public slanging match, especially when there is fault on both sides, as the arrests and Celtic's statement underlines.

No one condones bad behaviour, whether it be vandalism or verbal abuse, as Celtic have shown in the past when they have taken action against anyone found guilty of breaching their code of conduct.

But every club has their element of despicable people they would prefer stayed away.

Unfortunately, the Hearts v Celtic fixture is one with a history of attracting people who don't know how to, or don't want to, behave.

If people are breaking seats or spraying graffiti on walls, the onus is on the authorities to deal with it, through the use of stewards, police and CCTV.

The clubs should act together - before, during and after games - to ensure this is done effectively so decent fans can enjoy watching the match.

I have heard some calls for fans to police themselves, and this happens to a certain extent. But we can't expect anyone to put themselves at risk when there are people paid to deal with those acting in an unruly manner.

Anthony Stokes has tweeted about the sectarian abuse he received during the game, and that too is unacceptable.

Tynecastle is one of those grounds where you really get close to the fans and hear everything they shout at you.

But I don't think it helps commenting on social media, as Anthony did. That can further inflame a situation.

As I say, the talking should be done behind closed doors where, hopefully, the appropriate action can be agreed.
