I'VE tended just to keep a watching brief on events at Ibrox because, like the vast majority, I really don't understand all that is going on there.

However, I can fully understand why the news Mike Ashley wants the stadium and training ground as security on the £10million loan he is prepared to provide is causing alarm bells to ring among the support.

It's all in stark contrast to when Celtic were in serious trouble and Fergus McCann came in to rescue them.

The deal was completely transparent. He told everyone what he planned to do, including developing the stadium and offering fans the chance to buy shares.

Fergus did it all within the time-frame he promised, and left when he said he would.

It took several years for people to fully appreciate what Fergus did for Celtic, but where would they be now had he not been so determined to take control?

I don't know Mike Ashley, but I do know he is very successful businessman, who has already taken over a big club and has Newcastle on a very stable footing.

His offer is not the only option for Rangers, but Ashley could be the best option.

He was not the man who said Ibrox would never be put up as security; others have to stand to account for that.

As for the SFA rule prohibiting anyone from having a controlling influence on two clubs, I don't think Mike Ashley and his legal team would have gone this far if they believed this was an insurmountable obstacle.

He appears to meet the fit and proper person criteria. And, given who has gone before him at Rangers, surely this is more important.
