Claudio Ranieri’s sacking late on Thursday night was not entirely unexpected given how Leicester have been struggling in the Premier League this season.

But it does underline just how harsh football is.

One minute you are winning plaudits and the next your facing the guillotine.

It was only a matter of months ago that Ranieri was winning the coach of the year and Leicester were being lauded right, left and centre. Now the grim reality of staying in the top flight – and the money that means – has put him out of a job.

He will be disappointed but he will be experienced enough to know and understand how it works. It really is just football.

The players will still take to the pitch this weekend but the manager has found himself out of a job.

It is not a lack of success that was his undoing this season but rather the possible fear of failure and the drop. Ultimately, money talks but I am sure we won’t have seen the last of Claudio.
