Having strolled their way to apparent qualification to the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, Celtic made things a little more interesting on the final lap.

Still, that the stirring music of the Champions League will be blasted across Celtic Park once again was the be all and end all. Celtic will discover this evening just who they will face now in the group stages of the competition as they look for a little bit of luck as well as a little bit of prestige.

Having just missed out on making it into pot 3, Celtic will face up to the cream of the continent and their big bucks arrivals this summer.

What lies in wait now is a domestic campaign laced with the luxurious aside of Champions League involvement. Those crisp autumn nights under the floodlights have given Celtic some epic evenings in the competition since their inaugural experience under Martin O’Neill and more will be expected to follow.

Given the philosophy of the club and the manner in which Brendan Rodgers has laid the groundwork for a team who play with that in mind, this is a Celtic support who will turn up for these encounters in more than just hope; whoever Celtic will be taking on, there is a belief that they have it within them to punch above their weight.

The financial injection that the club receives for their involving will sing to a tune of at least £25m - at least - but it is the music of prestige that appeals most once feet step outside the boardroom.

There is glamour in the competition no matter who Celtic might end up being paired with, but coming up against a significant European heavyweight would certainly add to the sense of occasion.

The draw takes place at 5pm tomorrow night in BST and the Hoops will watch with interest to see who is coming calling.

POT 1

Pot one of the Champions League is a who’s who of Europe’s richest clubs. Flexing their financial muscles this summer has made them all pretty formidable and whoever Celtic come up against they are guaranteed to find the going somewhat tough against the real heavyweights.

Real Madrid is the one that Celtic fans would love to see. The club have not come up against Madrid since season 1979/80 when the Spaniards won 3-2 on aggregate in the former European Cup competition. The vast riches of PSG are also a contender. Neymar’s switch has added to their weight while the French giants still had the funds to stretch to a whopping deal for teenage superstar Kylian Mbappe. Those names might give Celtic’s backline a shiver down their spine but it would certainly make for an interesting night for Rodgers’ side. Pot one contains the champions of the top eight European teams as well as the holders – Real Madrid. Here’s who else Celtic could get:

Bayern Munich, Juventus, Benfica, Chelsea, Shakhtar Donetsk, Monaco, Spartak Moscow.

POT 2

It might seem like complaining that the Harrod's truffles are causing too much indigestion, but if there is one team that Celtic will want to avoid it is Barcelona.

It is not just the memory of the 7-0 defeat in the Nou Camp a year back, as nauseating an experience as that was, or the fact that Catalan side were the last team to beat Celtic but also the fact they have played one another so often in recent seasons – five times in the Champions League over the last decade and one in the UEFA Cup too.

A Battle of Britain is always well received in Glasgow given the snooty comments that emanate whenever an English commentators nose is snubbed toward Scotland. And, given the amount of places Premier League teams get, the chances of Celtic coming up against one of them are pretty high.

Last season the Parkhead club acquitted themselves impressively against Manchester City while historically they fared well as Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool can testify. Manchester United, Ronaldo and all, can recount to how Celtic Park rocks on a European night while Steve Gerrard spoke last week of how he was ‘lost’ in the frantic atmosphere.

Given the remarks made last term by TalkSport’s Adrain Durham in which he was particularly scathing about the standard of Scottish football and the extent of Celtic’s Treble winning campaign, there might be a few in the Hoops dressing room who would enjoy the chance to prove a particular point.

In Pot 2: Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, Man City, FC Porto, Man United.

POT 3

Celtic were pipped to a place in Pot 3 when Seville, Napoli, Olympiakos and Liverpool all made it through their qualifiers. Had any of them stumbled Celtic, as top seed in Pot 4 would have been promoted up a pot.

However, again, the possibility of a battle of Britain looms large with Spurs and Liverpool in here. Curiously, Celtic have played Spurs often in various friendly games throughout the years but they have never been paired in a competitive match.

This might be the year. Liverpool and Celtic have come up against one another with relative frequency in European competition throughout the years, with the most recent the UEFA Cup quarter-final as Celtic made their way to Seville.

Basel and Anderlecht are known, too, to Celtic in the competition, although like Spurs, Celtic have yet to meet Roma in a competitive game.

In Pot 3: Napoli, Tottenham Hotspur, Basel, Olympiakos, Anderlecht, Liverpool, Roma, Besiktas
