Ex-Celtic star Craig Beattie has told of the moment he threatened to "punch Scott McDonald's head in" after the little striker's double cost the Hoops the league title on Helicopter Sunday.

Beattie played at Fir Park the day Motherwell stole a late 2-1 win over Celts to hand the league title to Rangers who won away to Hibs on the same day.

Australian McDonald, 36, scored twice in the dying minutes of the game to change the course of Scottish football at the time.

Striker Beattie remembers heading out on a boozy session with some Celtic teammates as well as their partners - only for his own missus to point out that he aggressively threatened who she believed to be a stranger during the night out.

But it was no stranger he was threatening, as he told Si Ferry on Open Goal, but in fact McDonald who had earlier in the day ruined Celtic's title ambitions.

Beattie recalled: "We went out and had a few beers, I can't really remember much of it.

"The wife goes 'what happened last night?', we were at Arta in Merchant City.

"She said 'someone came over to talk to you, wee guy, big teeth, dark hair, funny accent.

"We had a party planned, we were going to win the league!

"We still went to drown our sorrows, the couples were out and she said the next day I told Hoppy 'I'm going to leather you'.

"I can't remember saying it, but them big glaring white teeth in my face. You've just cost me a league winning bonus and a medal, hop it wee man."
