Scottish referee Willie Collum has incurred the wrath of Rome after a howler in the dying minutes of Roma's Europa League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach.

The whistler awarded a penalty in stoppage time for a 'handball' against Chris Smalling but video replays clearly showed the ball whacked the defender square in the face.

Players from the home side swarmed around Collum after he pointed to the spot to criticise his decision.

Italian media slaughtered the Scot for his performance, blasting it "unacceptable" and insisting it was a "scandal".
