STEVEN GERRARD has praised defender Filip Helander for leading by example during Rangers' clashes with Porto and Motherwell.
The Swede turned in his best performance of the campaign as Gerrard's side earned a Europa League draw on Thursday night.
And he stepped up when needed on Sunday as his late header completed a comeback victory over Motherwell at Ibrox.
Helander has made a solid start to his Gers career following his move from Bologna and boss Gerrard is pleased with the impact he has had in recent days.
He said: "I think he has shown great leadership. He had a little bit of an ankle issue before the international break and never played for Sweden.
"I decided to go with Katic at Hearts for the real physicality of Ikpeazu and then use Fil’s experience and leadership away to Porto, which I knew was going to be more of a technical game. One that needed experience.
"He did ever so well over in Portugal and today he has stepped up and been a leader again. I’m delighted with what he’s done this week."
