ROSS WILSON insists Rangers won’t sign players for the sake of it this month as he looks to clear the decks at Ibrox.

Wilson will oversee his first transfer window since being appointed as Sporting Director in the coming weeks.

Boss Steven Gerrard has previously spoken about his desire to reduce the size of his first team pool and that will be the priority for Wilson and his staff in the winter window.

Wilson said: “Steven and myself have been really clear on this. The squad is too big, we need to reduce the size of the squad and we have been consistent on that.

“It’s not as easy as flicking a switch because it’s the January window and it’s always difficult. That is our number one aim, however.

“The second job we had in mind was the contracts of those guys we felt we wanted here beyond the summer.

“We’ve started that process with the new deals for Allan McGregor and Steven Davis.

“We don’t want to be scrambling around looking for anyone to come in.

“If an opportunity arises and we feel it can improve the group then we will move on it.

“But we won’t be scrambling around. There’s nothing Steven and the rest of the coaching staff are looking at and saying, ‘we absolutely have to strengthen there.’ At a time when we’re trying to reduce the numbers it would make no sense to bring in another squad player.

“It would have to be something that we felt would improve us straight away because generally we are quite happy with how things are.”

Rangers have made a series of costly errors in the transfer market during successive managerial reigns over the last few years and there has been a significant turnover of players as Gerrard has shaped the squad that he inherited.

The strike rate has increased since Gerrard’s arrival and former Southampton Director of Football is keen to look forward rather than back.

He said: “It’s always dangerous to look at that in isolation. When Rangers were in rebuild mode I absolutely understand how we’ve got into a situation where the spending was big.

“Listen, it was not humongous, it was not ridiculously big. We now have a framework that we are working within in terms of the size of the squad. We are all in agreement in that.

“I won’t criticise what was done before because I understand why it happened.”
