How the Rangers player rated in their 1-0 win over St Mirren.

Allan McGregor - 6

One of five players who were restored to the Rangers starting line-up after sitting out the William Hill Scottish Cup game against Stranraer on Friday night. The goalkeeper had virtually nothing to do

Jon Flanagan – 6

Preferred to young Nathan Patterson at right back with James Tavernier injured. This was a big chance for the former Liverpool man to show he deserves a contract extension when his current deal expires in the summer. He was fine. His cross led to opening. But he doesn’t offer as much as his skipper going forward. Picked up a booking for a foul on Ilkay Durmus in the second-half.

Connor Goldson – 6

Handed the captain’s armband in the continued absence of Tavernier. Led by example. Had a strong penalty claim ignored by referee Nick Walsh in the first-half when he had his shirt tugged at a Borna Barisic corner. Helped the home team keep a deserved clean sheet.

Nikola Katic – 8

The Croatian continued his fine run of form. He wasn’t tested greatly by lone St Mirren striker Jon Obika. But the centre half was alert on the rare occasions the visitors got upfield. Got on the end of a Ryan Kent corner in the first-half and headed over. Had a shot saved on the line just before half-time. Went agonisingly close after getting on the end of a Steven Davis free-kick in the second-half.

Borna Barisic - 7

Got a huge cheer from the Ibrox crowd, who were chanting his name at the time, when he turned Ryan Flynn and cut into the St Mirren box on the half hour mark. Got upfield frequently. His crosses into the opposition area deserved better from his forwards.

Ryan Jack – 6

Was his usual composed self on the ball. His distribution was excellent throughout. Linked well with his midfield partners Steven Davis and Glen Kamara. Got on the end of a Joe Aribo cross in the 64th minute and flashed a header just wide of the left post.

Steven Davis – 6

Pressed the St Mirren midfield from start to finish and prevented the Paisley club from initiating any kind of meaningful attack throughout the 90 minutes. His defence had a quiet evening as a result. Went close with a long-range effort in the second-half.

Glen Kamara – 6

Came in at the expense of Scott Arfield and didn’t do much wrong. But he, along with Jack and Davis, didn’t ask enough questions of the St Mirren defence. Was replaced by Arfield with 20 minutes of regulation time remaining.

Joe Aribo – 7

Had his work cut out creating an opening for Rangers to capitalise on in the final third with St Mirren playing five across the back, sitting deep and hoping to grab something on the counter. But he worked hard to carve out a chance and looked dangerous whenever he got on the ball. Still, his decision making was, at times, questionable. Replaced by Sheyi Ojo with 10 minutes left.

Jermain Defoe – 7

With Alfredo Morelos serving a three match suspension the former England striker once again lead the line. Defoe opened the scoring with classic poacher’s goal in the 34th minute to take his tally for the 2019/20 campaign to 16. He is 37 now, but is showing no signs of slowing down.

Ryan Kent - 6

Unlucky not to break the deadlock after playing nice one-two with Aribo and bursting through on goal. The winger was only denied by a good save from St Mirren keeper Vaclav Hladky. But he struggled thereafter.

SUBSTITUTES

Scott Arfield – 3

Pushed for the second goal after replacing Kamara. Tried his luck from outside the St Mirren box but shot over. Forced a save from Hladky.

Sheyi Ojo – 3

Came on for Aribo. Shaved the woodwork with a shot in the 89th minute.
