Jemma Reekie admitted she’d shocked herself by smashing the UK indoor 800m in Glasgow.

The 21-year-old from Ayrshire produced the quickest time in the world since 2006 by clocking 1:57.91 in taking victory in an invitational race at the 4J Scottish Masters Championships at the Emirates Arena on Saturday.

It was the 11th best mark of all time and it catapulted the European Under-23 champion into the premier league after she bolted past training partner Laura Muir with 100 metres left to leave the fourtime European indoor champion chasing her heels.

And Reekie, who will now head to New York for next Saturday’s Millrose Games, conceded it was a run out of nowhere.

“I don’t even know what happened,” she said. “I need to process this.”

And Muir, whose time of 1:58.44 was only 0.01sec outside Jenny Meadows’ previous British best from 2010, added: “Wow, wow, wow.”
