Alan Hutton has announced his retirement from football.

In a career spanning 17 years, Hutton played for Rangers, Tottenham and made 50 appearances for Scotland.

The full back also had spells with Sunderland, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Bolton and Mallorca.

After making his Rangers debut in 2002, Hutton became a regular in the Rangers team until his departure in 2008. He played an integral role in Rangers’ Champions League campaign of 2007/08, which saw Walter Smith’s side defeat Stuttgart and Lyon.

He became the most expensive outfield player in Scotland in 2008 when he moved from Rangers to Tottenham for £9 million. He would make 51 appearances for the North London club before signing with Aston Villa in 2011.

During his spell at Villa Park he spent time on loan at a number of clubs. But after returning from his third consecutive loan spell in 2014, a strong pre-season earned Hutton his place as first choice right-back again. He signed a new three-year deal that September to secure his future at Villa Park.

Hutton was handed his Scotland debut against Austria in 2007, and would amass enough appearances to secure his place in the Scotland hall of fame. Whilst he never represented his country at a major tournament, he was involved in some memorable nights. Most notably, the 1-0 victory over France at Parc des Princes in 2007. He retired from international duty in 2016.

The 35-year-old has been without a club since the summer after being released by Aston Villa following their promotion to the Premier League.
