James Tavernier insists he is ready to take a penalty if he's asked to against Braga.

Rangers welcome the in-form Portuguese outfit to Ibrox tomorrow night in the Europe League round of 32.

Tavernier had been the designated penalty taker since Steven Gerrard’s arrival as Rangers boss and scored 14 times from the spot last season.

But a number of costly misses, including a penalty which rebounded off the post in a group match against Feyenoord earlier this season, has seen the Rangers skipper stripped of responsibilities.

Alfredo Morelos missed a spot-kick against Celtic in the League Cup Final in December, and Scott Arfield saw his penalty against Hamilton earlier this month saved. Leaving Gerrard without an obvious alternative to Tavernier.

But the captain says he'll step up to the plate if called upon by his boss should Gers be awarded a spot-kick in Glasgow tomorrow evening.

He said: “I’m always available for penalties but it is up to the gaffer and staff to make that decision. I’ve been practising on the training field like I always do if I am called upon.”

The right-back also spoke about the introduction of VAR to Ibrox for Thursday’s match. "I’m looking forward to seeing what comes with VAR," he said. "Hopefully it is not used and we just enjoy a really good game of football. We will continue until the final whistle is blown even if we are certain it is offside."
