THE president of the Italian Football Federation (IFF) has announced that he will ask UEFA to postpone this summer's European Championships so that his country's clubs can complete their domestic season.
Football in Italy has been postponed indefinitely in an attempt to curb the spread of coronavirus as global sport has ground to a halt amid the pandemic.
EURO 2020 is scheduled to begin in mid-June but there are growing fears as to whether or not the tournament - which is being held in 12 different countries across the continent - can realistically be held as the world grapples with Covid-19.
And Italy looks set to be the first nation to formally request for a delay to the championships, with IFF president Gabriele Gravina telling sports channel SportMediaset: "We will propose to UEFA the delay of the European Championships.
"We will try to get to the end of this domestic championship because it is fairer and more correct after the many investments and sacrifices of our clubs."
