Barry Nicholson has given his take on Ross Wallace’s claim that Joey Barton and Clint Hill still blast Rangers songs in the Fleetwood dressing room before games.

Ex-Celtic ace Wallace told Si Ferry on Open Goal that the pair along with ex-Ger Nicholson played Penny Arcade and Simply the Best ahead of Cod Army games to wind him up.

But Nicholson has played down those claims and while speaking to the Daily Record he gave his account of the story.

He said: "He is getting some amount of stick for that podcast! I’m good mates with Ross but Penny Arcade was not played in the dressing room. That’s not true.

“It was played over the tannoy to the whole stadium!

“It came after an Old Firm game that Rangers won last year. When the boys were warming up I just asked the people in charge of the tannoy to get that and Simply The Best on. That’s the true story!

“I’ll happily take the blame for it.”

Nicholson also gave an insight as to what it is like to work alongside Barton and he insists that he is a far cry from the player he once was.

He said: “Look, he loves being around the dressing room and he’ll still take the p**s out of players when he can but it’s not the same for him now he’s a manager – he has to keep that distance and keep it serious.

“Obviously with Joey as manager there’s never a dull moment anyway. For the rest of the coaching staff it has just been about getting used to that hype that goes with him.

“But from day one he has been absolutely brilliant with the staff and players. He is all about the culture round about the place and making sure that everyone feels involved.

"Obviously when he was banned for that period of time he has gone away and really studied the game.

“Of course there’s the odd argument about certain things but once we are on the pitch the whole backroom staff are 100 per cent behind the manager. Hopefully I get to work with Joey for a long time to come.”
