FORMER Rangers defender Ian Murray has launched a scathing attack on on-loan Ibrox forward Florian Kamberi, insisting that the Hibs man doesn't have what it takes to succeed for Steven Gerrard's side.

Speaking to the Sunday Mail, Murray said that the deadline-day deal to sign the Swiss-born striker was a "last-minute panic signing" and that Kamberi "would always be a back-up" at Rangers.

Here is Murray's rant in full.

“Kamberi looked like a last-minute panic signing for Rangers because of Defoe’s injury," he said. “I was surprised they went for him and I’ll be even more surprised if they want to keep him. I don’t think he has shown enough in the games I’ve seen him in.

“To play for Rangers in that position you need to be a special player. There have been guys who get 20 goals a season and can’t get a starting berth at Ibrox.

“It’s a competitive area of the pitch and I’m not sure Kamberi’s the type of guy who can handle not being the No.1 guy. To be the main striker at Rangers you need to be a real top-level player.

“Kamberi would always be a back-up to someone else at that club.

“It might be different if you play two up front but Rangers go with one. Look at the two main strikers there at the moment. Defoe has scored so many goals in his career and has played everywhere. Then you’ve got Morelos who is young, has a big talent and scores a lot of goals.

"Rangers have had problems with Morelos’ temperament. Do they really need two players like that? I’m not convinced.

“There’s definitely a player in there, with Kamberi. But he’s a funny player. He has great ability and he’s still young. And he shows flashes of real skill. But the flashes are just too far apart for a main striker at Rangers.

“You don’t see Defoe playing in flashes. You just see fantastic finishing and he scores you 25 a season. Kamberi might get you 12 and four of them will be spectacular. But 12 goals isn’t enough to be a top striker at a club like Rangers.

“Kamberi wasn’t a regular starter for Hibs, remember. He was in and out of the team.

“The proof is in the pudding. You never let a player join one of your league rivals on a loan deal unless you think it’s good for you. Hibs got Docherty out of it, which has been a great bit of business. That tells its own story.

“If Rangers and Hibs were to come to a compromise, a fair price would be around £250,000 with a year left on Kamberi’s contract at Easter Road.

"If Rangers don’t want to sign him and he’s back at Hibs, initially it would be difficult for him with staff, players and fans. But like anything else in football if he’s scoring and everyone’s cheering – things are quickly forgotten.

“It will be hard for him to go back and receive the love and attention he wants. But if he starts banging them in again, as he’s capable of, eventually the fans won’t care.

“I can understand why he said those things when he signed for Rangers and you have to take certain comments with a pinch of salt. The Rangers fans heard what they wanted to hear but, understandably, the Hibs supporters weren’t happy.

"He was a bit premature with his words. He’d just signed, no-one knew what was going to happen. So silence might have been the best option for him at that point. Coming out with what he did so early was poor judgment on his part and not ideal from Hibs’ point of view.

“I speak to a lot of Hibs fans and the majority of them will be glad to get rid of Kamberi. Most were happy to get rid in January, if I’m being honest. That’s just their opinion. I don’t think they’ll lose much skin off their nose if he doesn’t come back.

“And the kicker for Hibs is that they really like Docherty. If they can get him in this summer in place of Kamberi they’ll be absolutely delighted with that deal.”
