STEVEN GERRARD has confessed that he got caught up in the moment when Rangers defeated Celtic at Parkhead in December and admits he wouldn’t celebrate in the same manner again.

The Ibrox boss screamed down the Sky Sports camera before sending fist pumps to the away end as the Ibrox side recorded their first win on East end turf in nine years.

For some Gerrard’s celebration was over the top, while others viewed it as a fair showing of passion during an important game in the race for the Premiership crown.

At the time, the victory ignited a serious title challenge to Neil Lennon’s side, but following shock victories in the league and cup it looks like the Liverpool legend is heading for a second trophyless season in Glasgow.

Looking back on his conduct, Gerrard told Sky Sports: "Derby games are the games that I love. If I could pick one game now that I could go back and play it'd certainly be the Merseyside Derby away at Goodison.

“For some reason, I loved that fixture, I loved the hostility on the terraces. I actually thrived off the fear of losing them, the fear of what it would feel like if you lost one and you never wanted to go near that feeling.

"I think that's the reason for it, sort of, builds up and your behaviour comes from there. That was similar to my behaviour on the side at Celtic Park.

"The team hadn't won there in so long and, as the Rangers manager, it's on your shoulders to get the right result there. The build-up, you become really tense and there is that fear of losing the game, so I think the reaction there, obviously, I wouldn't do that again, in hindsight.

"But that is just a load of passion and emotion pouring out of you at that time."

Gerrard discussed the Old Firm derby having comparisons to the Merseyside version, but he feels more tension surrounds the big clashes north of the border.

He added: "It has a lot of similarities, the passion, the build-up is very similar. Both sets of fans are desperate to win the game and get the bragging rights for the game.

"What I would say, the Old Firm build up is more tense. I'd much rather play in them than manage them.

"You feel it a lot more as a manager because the outcome of the game is so important. But two magnificent occasions to be involved in. The atmospheres are both fantastic.

"I went to a couple of Old Firms as a neutral supporter before I took the Rangers job and I was blown away by the atmosphere, the noise and the passion on the terraces up there.

"Being on the side of the pitch it's even bigger and even better. The atmosphere at both stadiums is fantastic."
