RANGERS will always hold a special place in his heart, but Jason Holt knows his time at Ibrox is coming to an end when his contract expires later this summer.

The 27-year-old sealed a dream move to the Light Blues in 2015 and went on to help Mark Warburton’s side gain promotion back to the Scottish Premiership with a number of standout performances in the middle of the park.

Holt played 33 times, scoring two goals, during the 2017/18 season, but upon the arrival of current Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, he has failed to make an appearance since.

And now following two loan stints away from Ibrox Holt knows he will have to be on the lookout for a new club come the end of the current campaign.

Speaking to Herald and Times Sport, he said: “I’ve not really heard much from Rangers to be honest, as I stand just now my contract is up at the end of May so as far as I am aware I will be leaving.

“There will be a lot of players in the same boat as me, maybe being out on loan or out of contract in the summer, so you don’t know what is going to happen.

“When a decision gets made on the football side of things then it will become a little bit more clearer for me.

“I’ve absolutely loved my time at Rangers, obviously the first three years were great. I enjoyed it so much and had a great relationship with the supporters.

“There’s no better place to play your football and it was different class. I met some great people along the way, I absolutely loved it.

“In my first season winning the Championship title was brilliant, it was expected of the team, but to do it in the fashion that we did was great. To play at a big club like Rangers you get to play in the biggest of games and I have made a lot of good memories over the years.”

Holt has spent this season on-loan at St Johnstone where he has played a key role in guiding the Perth side out of the relegation zone into a position that looks set to land them a top six finish if the Premiership is terminated early.

But despite this successful stint for Tommy Wright’s team, he admits he’s been keeping a close eye on his parent club during what he calls a “frustrating campaign”.

He continued: “It is hard to judge a team looking from the outside, but at the moment it would be a frustrating campaign.

“But along the way they have had some great European nights with some unbelievable results against some top teams.

“They did unbelievably in the first part of the season and then it ended after Christmas. But it is hard to pinpoint any reason why it has gone wrong.”

Holt also praised former teammate Ryan Jack, who has  become a regular under Gerrard and is slowly edging his way into Steve Clarke’s Scotland plans.

Jack has already been described as a leader by his manager and Holt believes he has all the makings of a future Ibrox skipper.

He added: “I always expected Ryan Jack to be a success. Before he signed for Rangers I had played against him when he was at Aberdeen and I thought he was a top player.

“When he came to Ibrox you could see straight away the qualities that he had and I think he is a real winner. He has continually improved over the last few years and you can see that in his performances after being so consistent.

“He definitely has the attributes to be a captain one day. He’s had previous experience of being captain at Aberdeen and you can see he is a real leader within that team.”

Holt spent last season on-loan at Fleetwood with Joey Barton before linking up with Tommy Wright at Saints at the beginning of this season.

And after racking up valuable game time under the leadership of the Northern Irishman, the former Hearts man says he’s open to a McDiarmid Park return come the opening of the summer transfer window.

He said: “I would love to go back to St Johnstone, they are a great club and I have really enjoyed my time there. I got on really well with the staff and the players, which is really important when you go to a new club. It was really easy for me to integrate.

“As soon as I went in I got on really well with the lads. They are a really good bunch.

“When I went they hadn’t had a great start to pre-season and the league cup campaign. It was obviously a difficult start, but I knew looking at the squad that it was strong and didn’t reflect where we were in the table.

“It has been quite a turnaround for the team. We always knew that we could turn it around at some point.

“Even the games that we were weren’t winning, the performances were there, but ultimately it’s about picking up results.

“As soon as we got the first couple of results, we knew the confidence would pick back up and we would get on a wee roll ourselves and that is how it has turned out.

“If we were to finish in the top six, then it is a great achievement considering where we were three or four months ago.”
