JON FLANAGAN has emerged as a transfer target for Joey Barton's Fleetwood Town, according to reports.

The former Liverpool defender was released by Rangers last month and is currently on the hunt for a new club.

According to The Scottish Sun, ex-Ger Barton is keen to bring the 27-year-old to his side.

Flanagan made 39 appearances during his time at Rangers but he was mostly kept out the team by James Tavernier and Borna Barisic.

Steven Gerrard released six players last month with their contracts expiring.

Wes Foderingham, Andy Halliday, Jason Holt, Jordan Rossiter and Jak Alnwick also departed the club.

In a club statement Gerrard said: "I want to recognise the contribution of the players who are leaving our squad at the end of this season.

“There is a lot more that people contribute to, away from the fixtures each weekend and I commend each of the departing players for what they have given to us day in and day out. Work continues on a daily basis in planning and preparation for next season.”
